If you drive from Oleśnica to Wrocław in the morning, you probably know this view well. Around Długołęka, a queue heading into the city, car after car. In many of them there's only the driver.
And a good share of those people probably drive a very similar route every day, at a similar time. After work they come back exactly the same way.
We've been looking at this through the lens of shared commutes for a long time.
Until now, inOneCar has worked mainly inside companies. An employer launched the system for their staff, and employees could arrange shared rides to work.
Now we want to try something a little different.
We're starting to gather people who regularly travel between Oleśnica and Wrocław, wherever they work.

We're starting with one specific route
To begin with, we're focusing mainly on this corridor:
Oleśnica – Borowa – Długołęka – Mirków – Kiełczów – Wrocław, especially towards Psie Pole and Zakrzów.
We don't want to open up the whole of Wrocław and its surroundings at once, because shared commutes only make sense when there's actually someone to ride with.
If someone opens the app and finds nobody for their time or route, it's hard to expect them to keep checking it every day for weeks.
That's why we first want to see where the people who actually travel similar routes are.
In the form you enter where you're travelling from and where to. Once more people sign up on a given stretch, we'll be able to launch shared rides there.
We also want to show how many people have already signed up on each route. That way it will simply be clear whether a direction is starting to "fill up".
You don't have to start from exactly the same place
What matters to us is not just the starting point and the destination.
The whole route counts too.
It may turn out that someone lives a few kilometres from you or works somewhere else, but for a large part of the way they're driving exactly where you are.
Those are the connections we want to find.
The system also takes the driver's route into account, so that a shared ride doesn't mean big detours.
What if you work shifts?
That's not a problem.
Start times like 6:00, 14:00 or 22:00 are very familiar to us, because for years we've worked mainly with manufacturers and plants running shift systems.
What does a ride cost?
If someone takes you in their car, it's natural that you chip in for fuel.
The app records rides and shows who owes whom how much.
The payment itself happens between passenger and driver, for example by BLIK, bank transfer or cash.
inOneCar doesn't take a commission on rides.
The point isn't for the driver to earn money on their commute. It's rather that they don't cover the whole cost alone if they're driving that way anyway and can take someone along.
Why start with commuting to work?
Because it's predictable.
Most of us travel at similar times, along similar routes, several times a week.
After a few rides, a shared commute stops being something you have to organise from scratch every time. You simply know that someone from your area is heading in a similar direction.
That's the model we want to build first on the Oleśnica – Wrocław route.
Not a mass-market app for the whole of Poland from day one, but one specific route where there really are people ready to ride together.
